Donald Trump: Businessman turned poilitican, Got a bad feeling about this
68Remember the "Giant sucking sound"?
One of the big things happening in this pre-election year is the spectacle of individuals beginning to jockey for position. Governors and former Governors and Senators and Congressman, all testing out the waters, forming "exploratory committees." It's a never-ending cycle, every four years. Like some type of plant that lives on that sprouting cycle.
Occasionally you have someone that enters the fray who is not what you would normally envision as a player in the heavier game of politics. A few cycles ago it was H. Ross Perot. You may remember if you are old enough. The little businessman from Texas with the funny ears and the bad haircut. This time around we have another businessman with a bad haircut. i can't comment on his ears. We have Donald Trump
Apples and Oranges...i guess.
H. Ross Perot came on the scene during the Presidential campaigns of 1992. The main contestants were shaking out to be incumbent President George H.W. Bush and the upstart from Arkansas, William Jefferson Clinton.
Perot had captured a bit of the imagination of the nation because he represented something that had not been seen in a time on the political landscape. He was a Washington outsider who boasted that, being a successful businessman, he knew what was good for the nation and how to run the economy better than your garden variety politicians. He was brash and opinionated and produced charts and graphs to better shore up his claims. But he couldn't beat the juggernaut that was the Clinton political machine. He lost and Bush lost with him.
Four years later he jumped up again. This time it was incumbent Clinton against old school conservative Bob Dole, who had been Vice-Presidential running mate with Gerald Ford. I had neglected to mention that Perot had run on a third ticket in both these elections. Third party candidates traditionally have siphoned votes form the conservative side of the ticket.
Such was the case in this contest. in fact, in 1996 about 49% of registered voters went to the polls. Bill Clinton. was re-elected with about 49% of that vote. Do the math. Bill Clinton was sent back to Washington on the power of about 24% of the registered voters in the nation.
Now let's turn our attention to the latest and greatest, I guess, of the political newcomers. Real Estate businessman par excellence Donald Trump has made some noises for a time and had now stated he will run and attempt the Republican nomination. He has already stated that upon losing the nomination he would then go on and run as an Independent, as did Perot.
This is something as Conservatives we need to look at long and hard. Notice I said Conservative and not just Republican. Three out of the last four races it is a real easy deal to see that we put forth weak candidates. Bob Dole......really? John McCain...proud that he served and suffered but I for one really didn't want him as President. He is not a true Conservative. I have a few doubts with Trump as well but that is really the least of the issue.
We are in real danger of repeating the mistake made with Perot. We believed that he was the real Conservative and not Poppy Bush. We believed for a time he had the answers. Then when he had to run as an Independent we learned the hard was that it wouldn't work. The electorate just doesn't slice three ways and fall to the Conservative ideology. Donald Trump is a novelty to us. But how qualified is he really to run the nation? Like Perot he is sharp as a tack in business. But can he bust heads with the Leader and the Speaker of the House? What about foreign affairs? In particular the porcupine that is the Middle East?
He has also mentioned a friendship and association with the Emanuel family from Chicago. That gives me an even more queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach.
There are some serious questions that need to be answered before we hitch ourselves to such a star. There are other viable candidates, as well, to be considered. Consider wisely Conservatives. This is a very critical election coming up. let's don't blow this one.
Good Night.

I liked Ross Perot, and now Trump! Sure he doesn't have all the answers, but I think he could do a lot of great things with this country, if allowed to! Just my 2 cents.
